What is a Berean and why on earth would I want to become one?
Are these your thoughts after reading the title? I felt the same way years ago. Who are the Bereans? Well, they are some people mentioned in the book of Acts. They were known for searching the Scriptures daily to find out if what other believers were saying was true.
And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few. (Acts 17:10-12)
Searching the Scriptures like the Bereans should be one of our goals.
When we hear the Word from someone, are we looking to see if what they say is true? Wouldn’t you like to be known for searching the Scriptures daily to know the truth? The Bereans were faithful and received the Word of Yahweh gladly! This is what we should be doing each day. Are we receiving the Word of Yahweh gladly and with all readiness?
Here is a prayer to guide you as you seek to become a Berean:
Yahweh, may I be open to receiving your Word with gladness and all readiness. Open my eyes to see the truth of your Word. When others speak, may I check their words with your infallible Word. Remind me to search the Scriptures daily and to find the Truth. Don’t let me become caught up in something that is not in line with your Word. May I become like the Bereans and seek to follow you and read your Word each day. Amen.
This was very true and it is so important to read our Bible’s every day! I am currently enjoying reading through the entire Bible in my own pace, and I’m currently in 2 Samuel. I’m really enjoying it!
I am so glad that you have found enjoyment through reading the Word! ~Peyton
